Good Monday Morning

This should be an interesting week.

If there's one thing that keeps me up at night in this job it is keeping my trainees in a good environment and a lot of that has to do with making sure people get paid and have opportunities to do the research they need to do. That part of my job just got harder.

You are not alone... I've heard several cases of accounting "errors" at the end of grants/start-up. In my first postdoc we kept our own accounting on the side, just to make sure we didn't get "surprised."

I don't exactly remember, but I had a grant or contract which ran for several years. I made a field trip which started in one fiscal year and ended in the next fiscal year. So I charged the first part to this year's budget and the rest to next year's budget. When I got back, I found out that something wouldn't work the way I had it. The next year charge was paid out of the general university budget, and I still had the money left in my budget to spend again. Ignorance is, in fact, sometimes bliss. It was an honest mistake on my part and I didn't catch any heat for it.
